Three Rivers Garden Club meets the first Wednesday of every month, September through May at The Garden Center at 100 East 8th Street in Rome unless otherwise noted on the Program Schedule. Meetings begin at 9:30 with a social/coffee and business convenes at 10:00. Visitors and guests of the membership are welcome to attend.

Speaker: Betty Grimes, past president of The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc., will present a program of the WAFA show held in Boston, Massachusetts this past summer. She is a National Master Flower Show Judge. She has served on the State Board for several years as Calendar Editor, Membership Chairman, Treasurer of Judges Council and Symposium and a member of North Georgia Judges Council, former President of The Designers Club and active member of Hiawassee Garden Club. Betty is presently serving as State Headquarters House & Operations Chairman. She is currently serving on the National Finance Committee of National Garden Clubs, Inc. and Alternate Director of Deep South Region. Her latest achievement is winning a Gold Ribbon for her design at WAFA in the Table Class.

October Horticulture Tip: It is time to divide and replant almost any crowded perennial clump such as Shasta daisies, perennial phlox, aspidistra, hosta, daylilies, and bearded iris. Container grown trees and shrubs of all kinds can be planted now.

Caroline is a member of Mountain View Garden Club and has been on the Laurel District and The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. Board of Directors. She is a Life Member of Rome Federated Garden Clubs, Inc., Deep South Region, The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc., and The National Garden Club, Inc.

Project: National Garden Clubs, Inc. President’s Special Project--This project is to collect information regarding gardens for the visually and physically impaired. We are looking for specially designed gardens that help children and adults who are blind, deaf-blind, or hearing-impaired (other disabilities may be included) develop skills and improve their social, psychological and physical well being through gardening activities.
November Horticulture Tip: As November begins, the planting season for shrubs and trees, plan your planting, then stick to the plan! A good plan saves you time and money. The results will be pleasing, not a hodge-podge or a wilderness.

Project: National Garden Clubs, Inc. President's Special Project: In May 1999, a partnership was formed between National Garden Clubs, Inc and Habitat for Humanity. HFH's mission is to eliminate poverty housing from the face of the earth. NGC's goal is to encourage garden clubs across the nation to participate in the landscaping of HFH homes. The theme of this project is "Open Your Heart and Hands", and the philosophy is that no commitment--physical or monetary--is too small. All endeavors and contributions will be gratefully acknowledged.

Speaker: Keith Mickler is the Floyd County Extension Agent and has vast knowledge which he shares willingly, with expertise and humor. Keith will share with Three Rivers his favorite and most accurate way to prune shrubs and trees in our area.

January Horticulture Tip: “Mid-way Month for Planting and Transplanting” gives us the idea to transplant trees and overgrown shrubs during this month. Pruning will be necessary to overcome transplanting shock. Remove at least one-fourth of the plant’s growth to compensate for loss of roots. Also, study the new catalogs arriving now and plan for new additions to your yard and garden.

Art will share his expertise in floral designs and the correct steps to making floral designs according to The Flower Show Guide of National Garden Clubs, Inc.

February Horticulture Tip: “Days Are Short and Few” but now is the ideal time to prepare new planting beds or to improve existing ones. Organic matter, such as peat moss, compost, or partially decayed pine bark, should be added to the existing soil. This will help hold the soil nutrients and also the water holding capacity of the soil will be improved.

March Horticulture Tip: “Spring Is Bursting Out All Over” is a great time to plant gladioli bulbs in mid or late March and continue planting at 2 to 3 week intervals until July. This succession planting will provide cut flowers over a longer period of time. Plant 6 to 12 corms each time. Set 5 to 6 inches deep and 4 inches apart. Begin planting petunias and geraniums in pots.

April Horticulture Tip: “April Showers Bring May Flowers” is the ideal time to plant annuals and perennials. To get plants off to a good start, prepare beds properly before planting. Sow seeds or plant the following annuals: coleus, impatiens, zinnias, marigolds, petunias, nasturtiums, hollyhocks, snapdragons and salvia. Add perennials such as chrysanthemums, phlox, pinks, Shasta daisies, oriental poppies, and clematis.

May Horticulture Tip: May is the “Month of Flowers” with roses in profusion and the flurry of color provided by annuals and perennials. Continue adding annual flowering plants and bulbs for summer color. Zinnias, nasturtiums, salvia, marigolds, cosmos, annual periwinkle, and other tender annuals may be seeded directly into flower beds. Plants already started inside should be transplanted outside as soon as possible to take advantage of ideal growing conditions such as cool nights and warm days.
